Emma Watson - Hermione Granger

About Emma Watson

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is 12 years old and comes from Oxford. She was born on 15th April 1990 and named after a close family member, making her Emma Watson II. Emma lives with her mother, Jacqueline, 43, who is divorced from her father, Chris, and her 8-year-old brother, Alex, who is 3 years younger than her. Both her parents are lawyers. Her favourite animals are cats, two of which live in her house. Her cat is called Bubbles, and practically lives on her bed, and Alex's is called Domino.

Emma has wanted to be an actress since she was about 5 although she doesn't come from a theatrical background. She has acted in school productions. These include the role of Morgan La Fay in the Musical Arthur, the Young Years (she obviously has a talent for playing witches; she dressed up as one for Halloween one year!). She enjoyed this because she loves singing. She has also played the part of the Angry Cook in Alice in Wonderland and one of the lead roles as the swallow in The Happy Prince. When she was 7, she also won first prize in her age group in the Daisy Pratt Competition for Poetry recital.

She is quite sporty, enjoying rounders, hockey, tennis, tug of war and sculling and her other hobbies include speaking in her school debating society, reading, and singing on her school bus! In her free time she also enjoys listening to pop music, especially Dido, Bryan Adams, Suzanne Vega and Samantha Mumba, and watching comedy films! She says that if she had an invisibility cloak of her own then she would use it to sneak into 15s! If she had magic powers she would would... cast Brad Pitt in Harry Potter! Emma says he 'is a dude' and she would give him any part if she could.

When it comes to her fellow the actors, she admires Julia Roberts, Goldie Hawn and John Cleese, (who stars alongside her as Nearly Headless Nick in HP)

Emma likes school, but doesn't love it like Hermione does. She does say though that she doesn't enjoy studying. Her favourite subject is PE, but she hates geography and maths.

Her favourite Harry Potter character is Hagrid "because I think he's is really funny!" If she were on the Gryffindor Quidditch team then she would like to be a chaser "because you get to move around a lot and you have the most fun!”

Emma also knows how she'd like the Harry Potter stories to end. "I would like Voldemort to be killed - properly dead - so that Harry wouldn't have anymore problems, for Ron to become really super-duper rich and for Malfoy's parents to go broke! She doesn't think that Ron and Hermione will marry though!

Emma is "obsessed with fashion" ( she especially likes DKNY, GAP and Harvey Nichols) and is a natural blond, but had her hair dyed a reddish-brown colour for the movie. Hermione's hairdo was a mixture of hair extensions and teasing. In an interview she stated that she NEVER wears her hair in pigtails, she wears PLAITS! According to Rupert, she can be quite bossy sometimes!

She isn't sure whether acting is her preferred career choice at the moment but she enjoys acting for the time being!

Emma's Story

Emma Watson was visited at her school in Oxford when she was in the middle of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, (her favourite Harry Potter book) and a big Harry Potter fan. She was asked by her Drama teacher, with several girls from her school, whether she'd like to try out for the role of Hermione Granger, and thought it would be fun to try. As she got further through the auditions as they got more competitive, and more disappointed girls were knocked out of the running, she wanted the role more and more. After several auditions, that is exactly what she got!

Reactions to the Role

When Emma found out she'd got the part of Hermione Granger she felt absolutely amazing - she has no word for it. She was with Rupert Grint (Ron) when she found out, both of which had been expecting another audition, rather than the announcements of the parts.

As soon as she discovered she had the role she telephoned her best friend, who was, according to Emma, as, or perhaps more, excited as she was. She screamed down the phone so that Emma had to hold the phone about half a metre away from her ear to avoid being deafened!

Harry Potter and the Philosophers' Stone

Emma was interested to discover what the exterior views of the school would look like. She was most excited about what the first view of the school would be like. She says that this scene took ages to film. They had to keep making admiring noises about the castle. She said the noises were the same ones that you make watching fireworks!

Her favourite scene was the troll scene because she had to do lots of stunts. There were six cubicles with safety mates underneath and she had to climb through gaps of 30cm (she kept bumping her head!) and do lots of dodging and ducking and diving under sinks!

Emma got to deliver some of the best lines in the film. Her favourite lines were:

"I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever plan to get us killed, or worse, expelled!"

and

"Honestly, you're going to take someone's eye out!"

She also enjoyed setting Snape's cloak on fire!

She thinks that Ron gets all the snooty lines from Hermione and that he always seems to come off worse. She may be right there!

Emma says that the hardest scenes to film were the visual effect scenes because she had to pretend that things were there, when really there was nothing there at all! From the set she says she would most like one of the huge chess pieces. One problem; will it fit in your bedroom, Emma?!

The first time she saw the movie, Emma said that seeing herself 10ft tall on the screen was really freaky!

Looking forward to the other films

Now that the movie has been filmed Emma Watson has to admit that making movies isn't all glitz and glamour! Some days the actors had to be on set 6.00am, which meant getting up at 5.30! She says that being recognised has changed her life because, although she thought it would be cool to give out autographs and photos, it is also really hard work!

In the second film, Emma is most looking forward to seeing how they'll make her look like a cat!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, London Palladium

Emma recently went to see the new stage musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which tells the story of a magical car made by an inventor called Caractacus Potts and features the evil Child Catcher!

Emma was among the celebrity audience who were baffled by the special effects at the world premiere at the London Palladium. And she spoke exclusively to Newsround Online after the show.

"I've absolutely no idea how they managed to fly the car on stage!" she said.

She recommended it, saying it was "It was absolutely fabulous," and "...very cool."

She really liked the costumes and the details in the set design (and all the glitter that falls from the ceiling during the show).

She also liked the feeling of being in the audience

"There was a great atmosphere, everyone clapped along to the songs,".

Emma said she'd like to be in musicals as she loves singing and dancing.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Filming for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban began on Monday 24th February 2003. The film is due out in 2004. Prisoner of Azkaban is Emma's fav book, so she has really been looking forward to the filming.

Yes, “Azkaban” is the puberty movie in the Potter franchise—the one, says Emma Watson, who plays Hermione, in which “all those lovely, lovely hormones start coming out.” How will the movie reflect the changes afoot? “Lots of sex,” says Alfonso Cuaron, the Mexican director who’s taken over the reins of the series from Chris Columbus. “Lots of nudity. And lots of sex.” Relax, he’s joking. But Cuaron notes that his teenage cast is coming of age just as the characters are, and that there’s, uh, pollen in the air. “You just have to let it flow,” he says. “You don’t need to encourage it. You allow it to be. And believe me, they have a lot of it.” Watson, who’s 13, has a sign on her dressing-room door that reads BEWARE: BABE INSIDE.
