Rupert Grint

About Rupert Grint

Rupert Michael Grint was born on 24th August, 1988. He is 14 and comes from Hertfordshire. When he read the Harry Potter books, he imagined his large family, James (11), Georgina (8), Samantha (6) and Charlotte (3) ) and his parents Nigel (38), a race-car memorabilia dealer, and Jo (34), a homemaker, who live in a converted barn and all have red hair (like the Weasleys!)

He had acted before in school productions, including the role of Rumplestiltskin in Grimm Tales and in productions with his local theatre, including the part as Rooster in Annie. He says he would like to carry on acting and use acting as his career because he really enjoys it.

In his spare time, Rupert enjoys playing football (soccer).

. Rupert loves all Jim Carrey movies, especially Ace Ventura, The Mask and The Grinch.

Rupert also loves chemistry lessons at school. "You get to make potions and stuff. It came in handy in the movie," he says.

Rupert's Story

Rupert Grint first found out that they were casting for the parts of Harry, Ron and Hermione on the Newsround website. He loved the character of Ron Weasley and when he discovered that they were auditioning boys for the part of Ron he just had to audition. He lived the Weasleys' and knew everything there was to know (from the books that have been published) about them. Ron has always been his favourite character because they have so much in common: red hair, a large family, mothers who stay at home, a love of sweets and a severe hatred of spiders!

Rupert was disappointed when he heard nothing (they were probably inundated with applications to play Ron from half the red-haired boys in Britain!) he didn't give up and, instead, he doubled his efforts and wrote a rap song explaining why he wanted the part of Ron and did a video of himself playing Ron Weasley, rapping and doing impressions of his drama teacher (filmed by his Mum!) and set of another application. This seemed to do the trick and he couldn't believe it when he was called to audition.

Reactions to the Role

Rupert Grint received a phone call telling him that he had to go to a big announcement the following Monday. He went to the announcement with Emma Watson, (see below), not knowing what was going to happen. The director, Chris Columbus, and the producer, David Heyman, were there and told them that they had got the parts of Ron and Hermione in the movie! He screamed louder than he had ever screamed in his life!

Rupert never even got the chance to tell his four younger brothers and sisters himself as, by the time he had got home, they had already heard on the TV news!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerers') Stone

Rupert was obsessed with the sweets that he ate in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone movie; and would have liked to take them away with him too! He says that the Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans really were every flavour! "There was grass, vinegar - and nice ones as well - ice-cream, etc...! He says that he had a really horrible one but he still doesn't know what flavour it was!

Rupert Grint has some of the best, and the funniest lines, in the movie, although he doesn't get to fly, (the broomstick hits him in the face instead!)! His favourite line was "Bloody Brilliant!".

He says that the Great Hall set was incredible with all the effects; with the floating candles and the flambeaus lit. He says that it is one of the most amazing things he has ever seen.

Rupert says that the most difficult scenes to shoot were the visual effects. His favourite scene was the chess scene because Ron got to steal the limelight for a while! He says that it was a hard scene to film because of all the dust everywhere.

He said that the best thing about playing Ron; apart from eating all the sweets, was meeting so many people.

Rupert says that he would use an invisibility cloak for sneaking out of detentions! As for Quidditch, he would like to be a beater so he can have a go at whacking some bludgers!

Rupert keeps in touch with his fans by posting comments on the message boards on the Newsround Website as "Permless boy". He says that it's weird reading messages where people are discussing him, but it's also cool as well, because it is a way of keeping in touch with his fans!

He doesn't post very often. He is called Permless boy after the hairstyles he had in Thunderpants.

year old boy, Alan Allen who becomes famous for breaking wind!

Rupert says that it took a hairdresser about 4 hours to perm his hair!

Rupert won the 'Special Achievement Award' in the Golden Satellite Awards 2002 in the category of 'Outstanding New Talent' for his role in Harry Potter and the Philosophers (Sorcerers) Stone. Well Done Rupert!
